Moving cost calculator

Quotes vary wildly because the inputs are hidden. This estimate shows every one of them: the road distance between the two metros, the shipping weight implied by your home size, the pricing method the industry actually uses, and the sales tax your destination charges on everything you rebuy.

Quick answer

A two-bedroom move under 100 miles usually lands between $1,200 and $2,200 with a crew, or $400 to $700 with a rental truck. The same household moved 1,500 miles typically runs $4,000 to $7,000 full-service, because pricing switches from crew hours to weight and mileage.

Boston to Tucson is about 2279 miles straight line and 2735 by road, so this prices as a long-distance move for a 2 bedroom home (roughly 5,500 lb of goods). Deposits, storage and vehicle shipping are not included.

How the estimate is built

Every coefficient in the open.

Distance is the great-circle distance between the two city centroids, scaled to a road estimate. Home size maps to a typical shipment weight: 2,000 lb for a studio up to 13,000 lb for a four-bedroom house. Under 100 miles, a full-service move is crew size × hours × a $75 hourly rate; beyond that it is roughly $0.11 a pound plus a mileage-weighted line haul.

The DIY path prices a rental truck by day, adds per-mile charges and fuel at around 9 miles per gallon, and assumes two hours of loading help at each end for local moves. Supplies are taxed at the destination city's combined rate, taken from the same rate stack used across the rest of the site.
