Quick answer
A US ZIP code is a five-digit delivery area, not a legal boundary — one ZIP can cross city, county and tax lines. Every ZIP profile here names the city and county it sits in, its ACS population and median income, typical home value and rent, the area code serving it, and the combined sales tax charged at the register. Across the 94 metros published here, the average combined sales tax rate is 7.47%. The highest is Seattle, WA at 10.45%; the lowest is Manchester, NH at 0%. State rates alone range from 0% in Oregon to 7% in Indiana and Tennessee — the spread between metros comes almost entirely from local stacking.

Common sales tax questions
Short answers to what people ask before they run the numbers.
- How do I calculate sales tax on a purchase?
- Multiply the pre-tax amount by the combined rate expressed as a decimal. At a 8.25% combined rate, a $100 purchase carries $8.25 in tax for a $108.25 total. Registers round the tax to the nearest cent on the transaction total, not per line item.
- Why is the sales tax rate different across a single city?
- Most states let counties, cities and special districts stack their own increments on top of the state rate. A city that spans two counties, or that contains a transit or stadium district, can have several different combined rates inside its own boundaries.
- How do I remove sales tax from a total?
- Divide the tax-inclusive total by one plus the rate. At 8.25%, a $108.25 total divided by 1.0825 gives a $100 pre-tax amount. Use the Remove tax mode in the calculator above.
- Which states have no sales tax?
- Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon levy no statewide sales tax. Alaska and Montana still allow certain local sales taxes, so a zero state rate does not always mean zero at the register.
